Amnesty International, Muslims Condemn Belgian Government Decision to Ban Burqa, Niqab
Belgium- Voting in anonymous, Belgian kuffar lower parliament on April 29th, 2010 passed the bill on banning the burqa from public spaces.
If endorsed by the upper parliament, Belgium declares itself a country that ‘violates the rights to freedom of expression and religion’ as what the Amnesty International said in regard to the ban.
“A complete ban on the covering of the face would violate the rights to freedom of expression and religion of those women who wear the burqa or the niqab,” said John Dalhuisen, an expert on discrimination in Europe saying on behalf of the Amnesty International.
Amnesty International, as reported, has condemned the Belgian lower parliament to pass the bill on banning the burqa from public space as saying that the decision would set ‘dangerous precedent.’
“The Belgian move to ban full face veils, the first in Europe, sets a dangerous precedent,” Dalhuisen remarked.
Opposition to the policy came also from Isabelle Praile, Vice President of the Muslim Executive of Belgium, as saying, “Today it’s the full-face veil, tomorrow the veil, the day after will be Sikh turbans...”
The decision of banning the wearing of burqa in public spaces has led Muslims worldwide to react, calling that Belgian Muslims are now ‘under attack.’
Souad Barlabi, a Belgian Muslim woman, told AFP that the Belgian government is trying to ‘wind us up’ admitting that she feels ‘under attack.’
“They are trying to wind us up. We feel under attack. (In fact,) there are other problems that are more important,” Barlabi said.
An old Belgian Muslim railed in Brussel on Friday also reacted to the ban throwing a rhetoric, “The Virgin Mary also wore a veil. No one says anything about this.”
The bill on banning the burqa was passed easily without any significant opposition amongst the members of the Belgian House of Representative.
There were only two parliament members who abstained from giving vote to pass the bill into a full law.
Bruno Tuybens, one of the two abstaining from voting to the bill, admitted that the law ‘disturbs’ him.
“This law disturbs me. I believe in freedom of expression and I don’t think it should be restricted,” he admitted.
The bill on banning the burqa from public space will come into a full law only after being ratified by the upper government, but it will not be achieved in few weeks.
Belgian kuffar lawmakers said the law was based on the security reason, which also means that they are accusing Muslim women wearing burqa of being committed in crime.
However, sentiment from the Muslims towards the law is negative claiming the reason behind it was only a ‘pretext.’
“It’s just a pretext. How many robberies are committed in wearing a burqa? I’m afraid that soon they’re going to want to start putting crescents on the backs of Muslims,” said Samuel Bulte, a convert to Islam, referring to the yellow stars of the Nazis forced Jews to wear.
The same opinion came also from Tuybens, who is a representative of Flemish Socialist, as saying, “There is no link at all between crime and wearing the burqa or niqab.” (VancouverSun/AFP/Islaminet)
